WHY PRIVATE LESSONS?

Private lessons are the primary way string students learn the essential tools they need to become successful. Playing in school each day gives them the basics, but one-on-one lessons allow them to grow and obtain skills they just can’t get from the classroom.

Some benefits of private lessons:
*Help students one-on-one who may be struggling to keep up in class

*Refine & polish the skills started in strings class

            *Learning solo music

*Working on Region and All-State audition music

If you or your child is considering continuing their playing in college, private lessons are a must!

HOW TO FIND A TEACHER

On the back of this sheet, there is a list of area teachers. You will need to call to find out the following information:

            1. Do they have any openings in their studio for new students?

            2. How much do they charge per lesson and how long is each lesson?

            3. Where do they live?

            4. Do they teach over the summer?  (if you are calling in May)

            5. Do we need to do a ‘trial’ lesson or can we just start with a lesson next week?

When you call, tell them what school your child goes to who their strings teacher is.  Tell them you are interested in starting private lessons. Then ask the questions above, as needed. PARENTS need to call and ask about lessons – not the students!

Guidelines for lessons:

            1. Always arrive 5 minutes early, with your instrument, a pencil, any music they asked you to bring and a small notebook for writing down your assignments.

            2. If you need to cancel a lesson, please try to call at least 24 hours in advance.

            3. Parents can sit in on lessons, but you need to ask the teacher first to see what they prefer. Please do not bring small children into a lesson, as it is distracting for the student and the teacher.

            4. Be sure to ask the teacher how he/she likes to get paid (cash vs. check) and how often. Some teachers require one month in advance, while others don’t mind if you pay by the week.

            5. Make sure your child is practicing the assignments for their lesson every day. If you are paying for the lessons, you want to be sure they are getting the most out of it!

            6. If you drop your child off, be sure to pick them up on time. Remember, it is not the private teacher’s job to watch your child after the lesson is over. Often, they will have another student, so please respect their time.

* Ayudar a los estudiantes de uno-a-uno que puede estar luchando para mantenerse al día en clase

* Perfeccionar y pulir las habilidades comenzaron en clase cadenas

* Aprender música en solitario

* Trabajar en la Región y la música audición All-State
